THE REAL BATTLE! KRISTA RETURNS TO TRACK WITH NEW HOPE

August 22, 2009 - Auto racing has different forms of battles at the track. Battles for points, battles for position, battles for wins, and the list goes on. However, when Krista Hadley made her return to the race track on Saturday night, it was to show she was back from the most important battle of all. Her battle with cancer. Just less than a month ago, she underwent her second successful surgery, only to will herself back to racing form, and put on one heck of a show.

Most people at the track, and those that have seen photos of the Team Hadley cars, have seen pink ribbons (in sticker format) on the cars, with her name on them. Signifying that she's not only battling this horrible disease, but is also a cancer survivor. A lot of people wondered if her car was broke, or if she was taking time off to do other things. Many were surprised to find out the real reason.

Before the racing action began, people stopped by their pit area to welcome her back, or to find out more about her situation. Every time, Krista had on her trademark smile and friendly attitude. Not once did she shy away from fans, or friends. Instead, welcomed their well wishes, and kind words. Something I'm sure made her feel great, and warmed her heart.

As the racing action began, Krista was in the first of two heat races. It didn't take her but a half a lap to take over the lead, and what a lead she built up. She put almost a full second a lap distance between herself and second place. By the time all seven laps were complete, she had pulled out to a full 6.7 second lead, to take the win.

The second heat race teamed up Terry Hadley with Mason Smith. Terry started first, while Mason started in the fifth position. It didn't take long for Terry to show he was fast, but this time, he had company. The second place car was right on his bumper the entire race. As the checkered flag waved, Terry notched another win, while Mason crossed the line fifth.

Now most would say a win is a win, no matter how you get it. This time, the Trophy Dash race would be bitter sweet. The husband and wife duo would start the race up front. Terry quickly took the lead, with wife, Krista, right on his bumper. They would play follow the leader for two laps, until disaster struck. Coming out of turn two, a puff of light blue smoke came from the back of Terry's car, instantly bringing him to a crawl. Right there to capitalize on the situation, Krista would take the lead, while the other two cars had to dodge Terry's slowing vehicle. After it was all said in done with, Krista notched another Trophy Dash win, while Terry would discover that his motor had blown, and that his racing night was done.

In the A-Main, Krista started eighth, while Mason started ninth. By lap two, Krista would find an opening while two cars raced side by side, and shot through to sixth place, and Mason had made his way up to fifth. The next lap saw their positions swap, and meant that Krista was making now setting her sights on fourth. That goal wouldn't happen instantly though. It took 10 more laps for her to get that spot. Then on lap 14, the third place car would get loose right in front of her. With no place to go, she hit the rear of the car in front of her and cause that driver to spin out. As they went by the start finish line, she was given the rolled up black flag for rough driving. Being as she was just out to race for fun, and not worried about points, Krista would make the decision to pull off the track. Thinking something was broke on the car, Terry and the rest of the crew would run to her car, only to find out she pulled off the track because she felt bad for spinning out the third place car.

Mason however struggled most of the A-Main with a car that just wouldn't turn for him. At one point, he spun out, and the car would not restart. After getting a push back to the pits, the car finally started. Even though he was down 4 laps, he rejoined the race to get some points and have fun. He would eventually finish the race 11th, while Krista would finish 10th.

This night was special from the point of Krista's return, and the success she had that night. Most of all, it showed that determination, and the love of racing, can be a wonderful thing. Getting out and doing something we love, and having fun doing it. Those that watched her go back out there that night, knowing who she is, and what she's been through, might have just shed a little tear of happiness for her... I know I did.

Team Hadley would also like to encourage ALL OF YOU to get screened and tested for cancer. The success rate for treating and beating this disease is greatly increased when you speak with your doctor, and get tested early. Krista is just such an example. So please, take a moment and talk to your physician. It may be the most important step you take in your life.

A NAIL BITER! TERRY GETS HIS FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON

June 6, 2009 - On a non-points raining night, fans and racers alike were treated to one of the best Super-4 races this season, and Terry Hadley came away with his first win of 2009.

The night of racing started with both Terry and Krista Hadley in the same heat race. Terry would start second, and Krista would start third. As the race got under way, it was pretty much follow the leader, with both drivers in the same order in which they started. Eventually the first three cars would separate themselves from the rest of the field. By lap 5 Terry would eventually take over the lead when the leader bobbled just a bit, allowing Terry to get by. On lap 7, Krista made her move on second place by diving down low to claim the spot. At the checkered flag, Terry won, while Krista came in second.

The Trophy Dash didn't go quite as the Hadley's would have hoped. Terry started second and Krista was in third. This time, it truly was follow the leader, both Terry and Krista could not gain ground on the leader, and would finish the race in the order they started.

In the A-Main, Terry started fifth, and Krista found herself starting in eighth. The race started in dramatic fashion when coming out of turn 2 on the second lap, Terry made a bold move and dove under the second and third place cars to claim second. Krista was finding herself stuck behind traffic and was having a hard time moving up.

By lap eight, Terry made a bold move again going into turn 1 and dove below the leader. His momentum would carry him by, but also forced his car to come up in front of the leader. There was barely enough room for both cars, and they did touch as the move was completed. Krista had finally got by cars and was methodically picking them off one at a time, and had worked her way up to fourth.

Lap 10 is where the action started. The second place car of Brian Johnsen had worked his way into second, and was gaining on Terry for the lead. Terry was already having to work his way through traffic which was causing him to slow down. Just what Johnsen needed. Krista has now worked her way up to third and was setting her sights on third place.

As lap 15 rolled around, Johnsen was nipping at the rear bumper of Terry's car. Each lapped car they came to, left just a split second decision for Terry. Does he go high, low, or between the cars. Each time, it was as if the racing God's were with Terry, and parted the way. In reality, it was great driving by Terry that allowed him to get by or squeeze through. Meanwhile, Johnsen knew his only hope of keeping up with Terry was to follow him, and he did. Bumper to bumper, both cars made their way through.

At lap 18, Terry made his braves move yet. Coming out of turn 4, two lapped cars were ahead of Terry and Johnsen. No room to high, no room to go low. That meant only one thing, go up the middle. In racing, there is no guarantee that by the time you get there, the hole will be open. This time, the hole remained, and both Terry and Johnsen squeaked through.

Now the battle was on with just 2 laps to go. Johnsen got up to the side of Terry coming out of turn 2, and Terry was able to hold him off going down the back stretch. Going into turn 3 Johnsen tried it again, but Terry's high line allowed him to keep his momentum and hold off Johnsen.

Johnsen had one more shot at Terry as the white flag waved. Johnsen followed Terry into turns one and two, but made his move going into turn three. Johnsen made his car turn a bit sharper in turn three which allowed him to cut down the angle in turn four. Terry maintained the high side of the track. As Johnsen made his move to get almost side by side with Terry, Terry's car got up a little too high and started to drift up the track. The two cars were virtually side by side at this point. As racing goes, it ain't over 'till you cross the finish line. Terry stayed in the gas, and his car responded by finding new grip on the track. That was just enough as Terry held off Johnsen by just 0.19 seconds to get his first win of the season. Krista once again finished in the top 5 by claiming the third spot.

TWO TIMES LADY! KRISTA WINS 2ND A-MAIN OF THE SEASON

May 16, 2009 - In dramatic and controversial fashion, Krista Hadley scored her second A-Main win of the season, while her husband, Terry, came in second.

The first heat race had Krista and Mason Smith, starting first and sixth respectively. Believe it or not, that was how they would finish the race. Krista however did win by a margin of over three seconds.

In the second heat race, Terry Hadley, started third, but by lap four was in the lead. Not to be outdone by his wife, Krista, Terry also posted a win margin of more than three seconds.

The husband and wife duo started on the front row of the trophy dash. Terry started first, with Krista starting second. Terry pulled out to more than a second lead on the field, while Krista found herself holding off the third place car. When it was all said and done with, Terry won, and Krista took second.

The A-Main would provide one of the most frustrating and controversial moments for the Super-4's. The race began with Krista in fourth, Terry in eighth, and Mason Smith in ninth. As the race began, it quite a cluster of cars, and most people decided that three wide racing was the best thing. A few cars got tangled up, and Terry took advantage of it and shot to fifth place, while Krista dropped back to sixth.

By lap four, Terry had picked his way through traffic to take the lead. Krista worked her way passed cars to find herself in fourth, while Mason struggled with an ill handling car and was in 12th place.

Terry never looked back and stretched his lead out lap by lap. Most would say that car was on a rail. Krista worked her to second place by lap seven, and was doing everything she could to try and catch her husband. Lap nine saw a caution flag, which was a break that Krista was looking for. It was much of a help for her though as the green flag waved again. Terry was too fast, and quickly built a nice lead on her and the pack.

Lap 15 had another caution flag, which once again, gave Krista that shot at getting by Terry. Meanwhile, Mason has managed to figure out what his car was able to do, or not do, and found himself in seventh place.

Not three laps later, another caution. The only difference in the line-up this time, Mason was now in sixth place. This is where the frustration, and controversy begins. The cars have a cone in turn three where they are allowed to get on the gas and begin racing. As they come out of turn four, they are to watch the starters stand for the green flag. If it's waving, the race is on. If it's not, we have a restart. As Terry came out of turn four, he saw the flag wasn't waving, and let off the gas. Krista however, kept her foot on the pedal, and blew by Terry to take the lead. Watching his wife go by, Terry then got back in the throttle, but it was too late. Krista's momentum from the bungled restart was too much for Terry to make up. Krista notched her second A-Main win of the season, while Terry finished in a protesting second place. Mason notched another top 10 finish by taking home eigth.

After the night of racing had finished, it was told by a very good source that Terry was correct, the green flag was never waved, and the flagger decided to let the racing continue. It was one of those situations where it was too little, too late for Terry. He will always know that on this night, his car was the car to beat, and if the mishap in the flag stand hadn't happened, he would have won the heat race, trophy dash, and the A-Main. A rare thing to complete in a full night of racing.

FINALLY! KRISTA WINS HER FIRST A-MAIN

April 25, 2009 - After countless attempts, several close calls, and many frustrating nights, Krista Hadley finally broke through those walls, and notched her first A-Main win. It did come easy though, she had to start in the middle of the pack, and survive was proved to be the worst night of attrition for the Super-4 class. Like that old racing saying goes, "In order to finish first, you have to first finish." That she did.

The first heat race of the night had Mason Smith in it. Starting second, drivers behind him made the track real small as the green flagged dropped. Going into turn one, they were 4 wide. Not exactly was Smith was ready for. Going with the plan of being safe, and letting things sort out, he finally got into a rhythm and finished in fifth place.

The second heat race saw the familiar duo of Terry and Krista Hadley. Terry started third and Krista found her self starting in the very back in fifth. As the green flag waved, it only took Krista a couple of laps to make up ground. While two cars battled on another down low in turns one and two, Krista took full advantage of it on the high line, and passed them both going out of turn two. Terry did manage to work his way to second place during all of that, and was gaining on the leader. Krista finally caught and got by Terry, but it was too little, too late, as they would finish second and third respectively.

The Trophy Dash race started off great and exciting. Krista started on the pole, and just as the cars came around to complete lap one, the second place car got too high coming out of turn four, and hit the front stretch wall, breaking parts on the right front of the car. The very next lap, another car broke and left just Krista and one other car to go for the win. By the time the clay stopped flying, Krista picked up her second ever Trophy Dash win.

The A-Main race saw Mason starting second, Terry starting sixth, and Krista rounding it out in seventh. As the green flag came out, it didn't take long for the racing trio to make their way to the front of the field. By lap three, Mason was second, Krista third, and Terry was in fourth. By lap six, the field of 11 cars was down to seven. Krista was reeling in the leader, and Terry was keeping right on her rear bumper. Terry was doing all this with a broken left front upper A-arm, and was eventually given the mechanical black flag. His night was done with by lap eight.

By lap 13, Krista was finally able to take over the lead when the leader got a little loose. The very next lap, the second place car checked up when Krista got loose. Rather than hitting her, he avoided an accident, but spun out himself. He was then black flagged for bring out the yellow flag for the second time. The field was down to four cars by this point.

When the green flag waved, Krista took advantage of the open track and widened the distance between herself and second place with each passing lap. By the time the checkered flag came out, Krista notched her very first A-Main win, while her son, Mason Smith, hung in to finish fourth. As the crowd in the stands and people in the pits cheered for Krista, you could almost hear her yelling in excitement in her car. Finally, she kicked that monkey off her back, and tasted the victory that has eluded her for several years.

GEARING UP FOR 2009

Jan. 27, 2009 - As the 2009 racing season is about to begin, the team is gearing up for what's to be an interesting time. Not only will the husband and wife duo of, Terry and Krista Hadley be back, but their son, Mason Smith, will be joining them in the Super-4 class. Making it a true Team Hadley Racing group.

Smith got his feet wet in racing while driving cage karts at the smaller track next to the speedway. After doing that for a bit, soccer became a new love of his. Devoting much of the last few years to that. Last year though, the family racing bug bit him again.

Last season, during an open 4-cylinder weekend of racing at the speedway, Smith timed in 14th. Most wouldn't be happy with that. Considering that was his first time in the car, that was a great effort. That effort put him in the slow qualifiers race, where he went on to win and secure his spot in the A-Main.

As racing luck would have it, the first corner decided the night for Smith. Going into turn one, he checked up for a slower car, got sideways, and was promptly hit in the left front corner of the car, ending his night. Extremely disappointed, Smith stayed in the car all the way to the pits, and continued to sit in the car. That moment of disappointment was evident, and the crew felt bad for him. Soon, he climbed out of the car, and told his crew and others that it was a part of racing, and that he still had a blast.

Don't think for one second that his Mom and Dad don't have butterflies, because they do. After all, it's their son they are going to be racing with, and against, but they also know that he has the ability, and the potential to be a really good driver. Not to mention they also want Mason to have fun, and have confidence in himself.

When asked why he wants to race, and why the Super-4 class, it was a simple answer, "Because my parents are in it, and I like to go fast." What teenager, especially a boy, hasn't dreamed of being behind the wheel of their parents Subaru, thinking it's a Ferrari and they're on the race track? At least this teen is getting to do it safely, and with guidance.

Though this will be new to Smith, he does have high goals for the upcoming season. He wants to be rookie year. Judging by what he showed at the end of the 2008 season, he will sure make a heck of a run at it. When Smith thinks about racing this year, he's a little nervous and excited at the same time, just like his parents are each race.

This year should be filled with new outcomes, new highs and lows, but most of all, will bring family and friends together, doing something everyone enjoys. During the summer, some families go on vacations to the coast. Some go to see the Grand Canyon. The Hadley's? Well... they race.
